Christmas Gift Season: How to Sell More Wooden Boards in Q4

For kitchenware stores, the last ten weeks of the year are the busiest. A solid oak or ash board is a natural gift: useful, good-looking and made to last for years. But gift shoppers buy differently from everyday customers, and your shelf has to be ready for them.

1. Think like a gift shopper
A gift buyer rarely knows which size or wood species they need. They want something that looks valuable, fits their budget and is ready to hand over. Lead with appearance and price, not with technical detail.

2. Build the range around three budgets

  • Small gift: a compact serving or breakfast board for colleagues and hosts.
  • Main gift: a mid-size oak or ash cutting board, or a round serving board.
  • Statement gift: an end-grain board, a set with a magnetic knife holder, or a wine table.

Fewer models with more stock work better than a wide range. Running out of a bestseller in mid-December costs more than not offering a tenth model.

3. Sell sets, not single items
Board plus care oil, board plus knife, two boards in different sizes. A set raises the basket value and saves the shopper a decision. Pre-pack some of them so they can be picked up and paid for in a minute.

4. Offer personalisation with a clear deadline
If you or your supplier offer laser engraving, a name or a date turns a board into a personal gift. State the last order date clearly in store and online.

5. Make it ready to give
A gift box or paper sleeve, a ribbon and a care card inside. If you have no packaging, keep at least one wrapped sample on display to show the idea.

6. Plan the calendar

  • October: decide the range and place the wholesale order.
  • Early November: build the display, pack sets, prepare online photos.
  • Late November to mid-December: peak weeks, restock bestsellers weekly.
  • Last week: ready-packed sets near the till for last-minute buyers.
