How to Display Wooden Boards in Store: Merchandising Ideas That Sell

Wood sells through the eyes and the hands. The same board can look like a commodity or like a premium product, depending only on how it is presented. Here are seven ideas that need little budget.

1. Stand boards up, don’t stack them
The grain is the selling point, and a stack hides it. Stacked boards also scratch each other. Use plate stands, slotted racks or a rail so every board shows its face.

2. Put your best board at eye level
Premium pieces belong at eye level, entry models one shelf lower, and large heavy formats at the bottom where they are safe to lift.

3. Light the wood warm
Warm white spotlights bring out the colour and grain of oak and ash. Cold light makes wood look grey and flat.

4. Leave one sample to touch
Keep one unpacked board that customers can pick up. Weight and a smooth surface convince faster than any description. A small “pick me up” sign helps.

5. Show the board in use
Style one board with a knife, bread and props such as cheese or fruit. Change the scene with the season: grilling in summer, a cheese platter in winter.

6. Group by use and add the extras
Sort the shelf into cutting, serving and gifts, not by supplier. Place care oil, knives and knife holders right beside the boards, where the customer decides.

7. Let the price tag explain
Besides the price, name the wood species, size and one benefit, for example “end-grain: gentle on knives”. Add a short care note: no dishwasher.

And keep it fresh
Oil your display samples about once a month. Dry, dusty wood undermines everything else on the shelf.
